Web Filters > Custom Categories

The Web Filters > Custom Categories page allows you to create custom category sets that can incorporate forbidden URLs and domains, forbidden keywords, and allowed URLs and domains.

Forbidden URLs

Forbidden URLs allows you to specify URLs that you want to selectively block or allow with logging of the action by the SonicWALL Content Security Manager. You add Forbidden URLs to category sets in the Web Filters > Category Sets page.

The Forbidden URLs table displays the names of the Forbidden URLs categories you create, any optional comments added when you create the category are displayed in the Comment column, and the Configure column with the edit icon for accessing the Edit Forbidden URLs window and the delete icon.

You have two available actions for Forbidden URLs categories in category sets: Block and Log Only, which you specify in the Web Filters > Category Sets page. Log Only allows users to access the URLs in the Forbidden URLs category but logs each access event in the SonicWALL Content Security Manager log.

Creating an Forbidden URLs Category

  1. Click the Add button at the bottom right of the Forbidden URLs table. The Add Forbidden URLs window is displayed.
  2. Enter a name for your new Forbidden URLs category in the Name field.
  3. Add optional text in the Comment field.
  4. Enter a URL in the Entry field. The Add button becomes available.
  5. Click the Add button. The URL entry is added to the List box.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each additional entry.
  7. If you need to edit a previously entered entry, select the entry in the List box, change the URL in the Entry field, then click Update.
  8. If you want to delete an individual entry, select the entry in the List box, then click Remove. If you want to delete all entries in the List box, click Remove All.
  9. Click OK. The new Forbidden URLs category is displayed in the Forbidden URLs table.

You can edit any Forbidden URLs category entry by clicking the edit icon for the category in the Forbidden URLs table. The Edit Forbidden URLs window is displayed, which includes the same settings as Add Forbidden URLs window

You can delete an Forbidden URLs category by clicking the delete icon for the category you want to remove.

Forbidden Keywords

Forbidden Keywords allows you to specify keywords that are substrings of URLs, which allows you to employ stricter filtering, blocking sites whose URLs contain specific words.

The Forbidden Keywords table displays the names of the Forbidden Keywords categories you create, any optional comments added when you create the category are displayed in the Comments column, and the Configure column with the edit icon for accessing the Edit Forbidden Keywords window and the delete icon.

You have two available actions for Forbidden Keywords categories in category sets: Block and Log Only, which you specify in the Web Filters > Category Sets page. Log Only allows users to access the URLs in the URLs category but logs each access event in the SonicWALL Content Security Manager log.

  5. Click the Add button. The keyword entry is added to the List box.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each additional entry.
  7. If you need to edit a previously entered entry, select the entry in the List box, change the keyword in the Entry field, then click Update.
  8. If you want to delete an individual keyword entry, select the entry in the List box, then click Remove. If you want to delete all entries in the List box, click Remove All.
  9. Click OK. The new Forbidden Keywords category is displayed in the Forbidden Keywords table.

You can edit any Forbidden Keywords category entry by clicking the edit icon for the category in the Forbidden Keywords table. The Edit Forbidden Keywords window is displayed, which includes the same settings as Add Forbidden Keywords window

You can delete an Forbidden Keywords category by clicking the delete icon for the category you want to remove.

Allowed URLs

Allowed URLs allows you to specify URLs that are always allowed.

The Allowed URLs table displays the names of the Allowed URLs categories you create, any optional comments added when you create the category is displayed in the Comment column, and the Configure column with the edit icon for accessing the Edit Allowed URLs window and the delete icon.

You have one available action for Allowed URLs categories in category sets: Allow, which is specified in the Web Filters > Category Sets page.

Creating an Allowed URLs Category

  1. Click the Add button at the bottom right of the Allowed URLs table. The Add Allowed URLs window is displayed.
  2. Enter a name for your new Allowed URLs category in the Name field.
  3. Add optional text in the Comment field.
  4. Enter a URL in the Entry field. The Add button becomes available.
  5. Click the Add button. The URL entry is added to the List box.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each additional entry.
  7. If you need to edit a previously entered entry, select the entry in the List box, change the URL in the Entry field, then click Update.
  8. If you want to delete an individual entry, select the entry in the List box, then click Remove. If you want to delete all entries in the List box, click Remove All.
  9. Click OK. The new Allowed URLs category is displayed in the Allowed URLs table.
